The next best thing to hitting the trail? Hitting these books. (BONUS: Nude drawing of me, below!) My latest for BACKPACKER.com. WRITTEN & ILLUSTRATED & FLASHED BY PETER MOORE
Ha. When we went Down Under with Tyler a few years ago, we were all reading it. And crying with laughter. That chapter where he describes all the ways you can die, and all the critters that can rip your guts out, in Australia is perfect Bryson.
This looks to be a big project for you, lots of research and great choices for books of adventure. And throwing in your usual sense of humor, a fun read. WTG!
It was a crazy project to take on, actually. So much work. Originally I pitched them on the 100 best! Dodged that one thank goodness. But now, so many great books to read. I’m starting off with Patrick Leigh Fermor’s A Time of Gifts, about the author’s tramp through Europe as a student , all the way from Holland to Constantinople. Reminds me of me, at his age!
A local weekend hike in the Cederberg turned into a very memorable event. We started in the sun with shorts, no rainwear high up in the mountains passed stone walls and stone gargoyles watching us, when the weather turned, with rain showers and stormy clouds. I almost froze to death, but we found a forgotten plane crash cite and made it home. 💪😊
No! I’ll have to check it out. My favorite is In A Sunburnt Country. Laughed so hard I cried multiple times.

Absolutely!
Yes, another good one!
I love Bill Bryson!
Have you read his Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid? A wonderful remembrance for us kids of a certain age!

A hiker's DREAM of a reading list - thanks, Peter!
Lots of writers who got lost and loved it!
I read the Bill Bryson book before and loved it. I think my favorite title among the ones you've listed is "How to Suffer Outdoors." 😁
I’ll put it on my *personal* list. I haven’t read all fifty!
The broken road by Patrick Leigh Fermor
Who walked from Hook of Holland to Constantinople in 1933!
