A writer influenced by Mann was Pynchon, whose Gravity’s Rainbow opens with hungover soldiers beating bags of ice against a scale replica Jungfrau, and described as two wasted gods urging on a tardy glacier. No idea why I remember that so specifically. But for once it came in handy
Okay, then it's the most beautiful closet I'm ever likely to see. I don't see any visits to the Sistine Chspel in my lifetime (though maybe I could Google them to see if they post pix of their closets).
What do you remember eating on your trip to the Bernese Alps? Grilled chamois, ibex, red deer, marmots, mountain hares, foxes, ermines, or lynx, perhaps?
It was suggested that I seek out bresaola (airdried beef) on my first adult trip to the Alps/Dolomites. It’s still my must have treat for holidays. Lucky to live where I can get it!
Goes well with the bitter very herbal liqueurs sold up in those hanging hamlets. Ummm
When we arrived in Chamonix we immediately headed for an ancient fondue house in the center of town and had one of the best meals of my life. Melted cheese? Bread? Hunks of sausage? Granny Smith apples? Chocolate fondue for dessert? Bring it!

Well, that’s not a very high bar, but I accept the compliment! Is there a closet in the Sistine Chapel. Maybe you should check.

Wonderful 💎
Perhaps one day I too will have such a wonderful closet.
It’s fun to hide artwork! Joy of discovery! Thx for your lovely comment.
❤️
Wow! A comment from Jan Parr, the Dunes Diva!
Now the closet is explained. I looked at the hangers but not the background. silly me!
Now you know. Keep your eyes peeled for further revelations on the Road2Elsewhere!
For some reason, substack blocks my use of the like button on every single writer, every comment.
Except you. How about that?
I have briefly escaped unfair curmudgeonry. Wheeee!
Wow. curmudgeonry! That’s a new word for me! Thx for the education!
You’re still young. It’ll sneak up on ya.

Never heard of bresaola, but it’s on my to-eat list now. Thank you!
