Pedal to the Mettle
I took a long bike ride yesterday. Here are the highlights. WRITTEN AND ILLUSTRATED AND YES, ANIMATED (!) BY PETER MOORE
IN THE SUMMERTIME I morph into a kind of centaur on wheels.
Not that it’s easy to bicycle where I live.
The terrain in Colorado’s Front Range is predictable: Head north, south, or east, and it’s prairie-flat and wildflower-dotted. But if you go west, young man, you go up.
When I’m pedaling uphill, staring down at the white line is my only hope. If I look up at the hill rising ahead of me, I’m doomed. (There’s a lesson about focus and achievement in there, I’m certain.)
But I’ve given myself permission to take a break when I need to.
Yesterday, my halfway point was the end of a dirt road in a not-so-nearby state park. I’ve heard there are mountain lions out there, but I’ve never seen one.
I packed my lunch.
PB&J is its own reward.
Mountain Lions don’t like peanut butter breath!
That animated sandwich! 😍
