SPECIAL TO THE COLORADO SUN: Commuters, Blue-State Republicans, and other endangered species that need rescuing
When an aquarium in Denver went belly-up, the city zoo took in 130 homeless animals. But these threatened critters need help, too! WRITTEN & ILLUSTRATED by PETER MOORE, for the COLORADO SUN
In addition to my efforts to amuse all of my 3,515 subscribers here—I love you all!—I also have a paying (ahem) gig for The Colorado Sun, my state’s supercool alternative to the hedge-fund owned Denver Post. And I’m happy to help the Sun by running in the opposite direction from their editorial mission, which is to improve the Centennial State through stalwart reporting in the public interest. My editorial mission is to point and laugh at Colorado, like when the SeaQuest Aquarium in Denver closed its doors and dozens of animals began to wonder where their next bite of seaweed might come from. The Denver Zoo and Downtown Aquarium answered the call! Which made me think: What about the other endangered species in Colorado? Cartoonist to the rescue!
DENVER’S SEAQUEST AQUARIUM closed its doors, cages, and fish tanks on Feb. 4, setting off a mass migration of creatures across the city.
Uh oh.
Denver has had trouble housing migrants. But now it appears that if you’re packing gills, fur, or a marsupial pouch, instead of a tattered backpack, you have good odds of finding cushy digs with all-u-can eat fish-chow and bamboo.
I’m touched by the efforts of the Denver Zoo and the Downtown Aquarium to house endangered creatures. But there are many more deserving specimens wandering our streets, looking for safe homes. Perhaps the zoo and aquarium could develop habitat for
