The April Fools
Spring-smitten optimists, headed for disappointment. Just like me. WRITTEN & ILLUSTRATED by PETER MOORE
ONE APRIL FIRST, long ago, my sons called my office in great excitement. They took turns telling me how, as they got off the school bus that day, they saw a moose sprint down our driveway and into the woods! It was amazing! Long legs! Big antlers! Fast hoofbeats! (Note: We were living in Pennsylvania at the time. The last Keystone-state moose was shot in 1790.) As a moose enthusiast, and a True Believer in my sons, I totally went for it. Then my wife began cackling in the background, and my children lost it, too.
Happy April Fool’s day, Dad!
But hey: I’m proud of my optimism, even if it does make me look ridiculous from time to time. How can you not be optimistic, right now? The sun is climbing higher in the sky, the temperatures are warming, and our forests have yet to burst into flame. It turns a lot of us into believers!
Just like all of these April Fools, below.
"The greatest lesson in life is to know that even fools are right sometimes."
- Sir Winston Churchill
