TWO YEARS AGO, I WAS OUT TO LUNCH WITH MY FRIEND JASON, who listened to what I’d been up to since Covid killed the cannabis magazine I was editing. He paused, then said these memorable words: “You really ought to be on substack.”

“Sub-wha?” was my initial reaction, so he explained it all to me: People who write (and draw!) need to have direct contact with their readers (and art appreciators!), and not wait for some damn publisher to give their blessing to my work. Substack is a good way to do that.

And he was right.

So I started posting illustrated excerpts from the coming-of-age-in-Paris memoir I started when my Covid trapped me in my creator barn…
