Tools like archive.ph have been doing a brisk side business in accidental transparency. Paywalls aren’t so much barriers as…suggestions with good PR.

I love this, and I am a paid subscriber. 😇

A very fun, as we never used to say, column. I spent lotta time in Paris at same stage. Always wished I were French after that.

For what it’s worth to you I heard Lisa Donnelly say on her recent Live with Andy Borowitz that she knows her subscribers like to see her actually doing a drawing: starting with blank page. She turns her camera on to her tablet and draws whatever occurs to her. Jason Chatfield of New Yorker cartoons interviews people and half way through he turns his camera and draws with a dip pen and sometimes his guest draws as well. I bet you know others as well that make that live drawing central to their Substack and others who have just started doing it because folks seem to really be interested in watching the character come to life. It’s not every artist’s wish to do something like that but you might consider it as you lower the paywall.

Wow! I do love reading your work! You are an amazing human being! Thank you! As to the why: your writing is funny, in a kind-hearted way, and very human - not quite the right word, but I hope you get it. Reading your posts is sitting into kitchen drinking coffee with a favorite big brother while he chatters on about his youthful adventures. And your whimsical drawing style is just the ticket! BTW, I just had to give up coffee because it was giving me heart palpitations. If you ever have to give up caffeine, I can highly recommend Peet's Big Bang decaf... it obviously doesn't offer a nice buzz, but at least it tastes like the real thing...
